After the iPhone was announced in Germany today i found this commercial in a German Newspaper:

Take a closer look and realize this is definitely not silver:

Looks like there could be a white iPhone in the future. Or the guys from the print service messed it up.

Updating Mac OS X offline

May 10th, 2007

Tired of leeching tons of megabytes on updates after re-installing your system? Here is the solution!

OliU-Screenshot

Who does not know this problem. After re-installing your system there are a huge amount of updates to download and install. Even for those having a fast Internet access it takes a while. And what to do if you have to keep more than one system up-2-date.

The German computer magazine c’t came up with a neat solution (Artikel aus c’t 10/07, S. 192). They created a little application based on AppleScript that does the work for you.

It is called OliU (OfflineUpdates). You can download it here. The archive contains three files

  • OliU.zip The application OliU, which you have to copy to your hard disk
  • ctOliU.src.zip The XCode-project, to customize it
  • wget-1.10.2.tar.gz The source code of wget, that was used to create wget, whis is part of OliU.

The application will do the download for you and create a disk image. You can store that then either on DVD-R(W) or on an external drive like your Apple iPod. Or you can put it in your “Web-Sites”-folder and distribute it over the local network.

The OliU works for both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs. Even the application updates are included. The only restriction is, that Mac OS X earlier than 10.4 are, due to update mechanism, unsopperted.

A little legal information: The application is copyright protected and not Public Domain. It is not meant to be used as commercial.
You are encouraged to copy and distribute the tool or parts of it as long as

  • you do not charge money for it and
  • keep the user informed about the origin of it.

More information (in German) you find on the c’t Web site

Telematics exam done

May 8th, 2007

Today I took my exam in Computer Systems & Telematics. I was pretty nervous but the moment the exam started all the nervousness was gone.

30 minutes later the professor told me my grade. A 1.7!!! I guess I could have done better but I forgot some facts. Shame on me.

There the good news end. From tomorrow on I will have to work hard again on my next exam which is on 18th May. And this is going to be much harder. :-(

Apple has said that “some batteries” in its range of MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops have “performance issues”.

I wonder if my MacBook battery is affected.

For my 15-inch G4 Powerbook 1,67 Ghz I got a new battery before.

A new topic for my seminar

April 25th, 2007

After finding out my seminar about “Mobile Cache Management” is held at the same days as the Day of the German Infantry, I had to find a new one. And I did.

I attended to the seminar aobut “Exploring Mobility in SOA” and will hold a presentation about “Mobile transactions”. Now I have to start collecting some material for that.
